Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation Nationwide

Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation: The Fresno Owner’s Guide

If you have Knauf radiant barrier sheathing or foil that’s torn, delaminated, or sagging away from your roof deck, we stock Knauf-compatible radiant barrier and install it across Fresno for $2.20 to $3.80 per square foot, most jobs finished in a single day. That’s the installed price, parts and labor, written down before we touch anything. Most Fresno homeowners discover the problem in July or August, when the attic hits 140 degrees and the air conditioner can’t keep up, or after a roof repair when a contractor pulled a section loose and never said anything.

We are Woolsey Insulation Fresno, an independent insulation contractor, not affiliated with Knauf. But we’ve worked with their radiant barrier products long enough to know exactly what fails, why it fails in the Central Valley heat, and what it takes to put it right.

Key takeaways:

  • Knauf radiant barrier installation in Fresno typically runs $2.20 to $3.80 per square foot installed
  • The two big failure points here are heat-induced adhesive breakdown and roofers disturbing the barrier during repair work
  • We keep Knauf-compatible radiant barrier material and Reflectix in stock for same-week installation
  • Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, at no extra charge

Which Knauf Models This Applies To

Knauf makes radiant barrier in two main forms: foil-faced OSB sheathing (their Radiant Barrier Sheathing line, commonly sold in 4×8 and 4×10 panels) and the newer Knauf Insulation EcoBatt Radiant Barrier, which is a fiberglass batt with a foil face. The sheathing gets used most often in Fresno attics, installed under the roof deck with the foil facing down toward the attic space. The batt product sits between rafters.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: if your home was built between roughly 2004 and 2016, you probably have the sheathing, and the foil was bonded at the factory. When it fails, you can’t just glue it back. The adhesive bond between the foil and the OSB breaks down after years of 130-plus degree attic temperatures, and once that happens, the foil sags, tears, and stops reflecting heat. We replace panels rather than trying to resurrect them. If you’re not sure which product you have, look for the Knauf stamp on the panel edge or the printed facing on the batt. No stamp? Snap a photo of what’s peeling and we can usually identify it from a picture before we come out.

We specify Knauf-compatible material for Knauf jobs, but we’ll be straight with you: Reflectix, the other radiant product we stock, performs the same reflective function at a similar installed cost. If your attic layout makes a stapled-up foil roll the better choice than panel replacement, we’ll tell you that on the front end, not after we’ve started cutting.

Signs Your Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing

  • Foil sagging between rafters. This is the number one call we get in Fresno. The factory adhesive has let go from heat cycling, and the foil is now drooping in sheets. It still looks shiny from the attic floor, but it’s barely reflecting anything once it’s hanging in folds.
  • Tears or punctures around roof penetrations. Plumbers, electricians, and cable installers cut through radiant barrier to reach vents, can lights, and wiring. If the cuts were never sealed or re-foiled, you’ve got gaps where heat pours straight through. We see this constantly in older Fresno neighborhoods like the Tower District, where decades of upgrades left attics looking like Swiss cheese.
  • Dust-coated foil. Reflective material only works if the surface stays reflective. In Clovis and northeast Fresno, where summer dust storms blow fine silt through attic vents, a layer of dust turns shiny foil into a dark absorber. If you can wipe a finger across the foil and leave a clean stripe, it’s lost most of its reflective value.
  • Attic heat you can feel from the hallway ceiling. If the ceiling below the attic is warm to the touch in the late afternoon, the radiant barrier isn’t doing its job. A working barrier keeps the underside of the roof deck’s heat from radiating down onto the insulation. When it fails, your insulation is fighting a losing battle.
  • Rising cooling bills with no other explanation. If your July electric bill jumped 20 to 30 percent over last year and your AC is the same age and condition, a compromised radiant barrier is a common culprit. The AC runs longer to overcome the extra attic heat gain, and you pay for it every month.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Radiant barrier installation in Fresno runs $2.20 to $3.80 per square foot, installed. A standard 1,500-square-foot attic, which is typical for a Fresno ranch or a newer home out toward Woodward Park, lands between $3,300 and $5,700 for full barrier replacement. Smaller repair jobs, like re-foiling a section around a bathroom vent, can run $400 to $900.

What moves the price: attic access (a tight scuttle in a 1940s bungalow means more labor than a pull-down stair in a 2010s build), how much of the old barrier has to come down and be hauled away, and whether any batt insulation needs to be lifted and re-set so we can reach the roof deck. The Kingswell Way applies to every radiant barrier job we do: a written price before work starts, a committed arrival window, a job site left cleaner than we found it, and a written guarantee on the installation. If the barrier sags or fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the promise, and it’s in writing on every job.

Glenn Hartley will tell you he’s climbed into enough Fresno attics to know that nobody should quote a radiant barrier job from the driveway. “Look before you quote, every attic tells you something the paperwork won’t.” That’s why our price is always based on an actual look at what’s up there. Glenn got his start in building science at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent more than a decade working Central Valley attics, from tight retrofits in old Tower District bungalows to new construction near Woodward Park. He insists on seeing the attic before quoting because he’s found too many surprises behind scuttle holes to trust a square-footage guess.

DIY or Call Us?

Radiant barrier replacement is not high-tension dangerous like garage door springs, and it won’t electrocute you like a panel. But it’s attic work: 130-degree heat, awkward angles, and the real possibility of stepping through a ceiling joist if you misstep. If you want to check things yourself, go up with a flashlight and look for sagging foil, tears around penetrations, and dust buildup. That’s safe and smart.

Where DIY goes sideways is when homeowners try to staple up barrier in a tight attic without the right fasteners, or they cover soffit vents thinking they’re sealing the attic properly. Blocking airflow is worse than no barrier at all. If you’ve got a small tear near an accessible vent, a foil tape patch can buy you a season. But for replacement panels, full attic re-foiling, or anything that means working above blown-in insulation, it’s worth a pro.
